Restore files from a backup
If your computer goes through a hardware failure or if some of your files are deleted from your computer and you've backed up your files, you can restore the files to your computer from a previous backup. If you're using a hub PC, you can restore backup files from any computer in your OneCare circle. You can choose which files to restore and which backup to restore the files from.
To restore all files from a backup:
- Open Windows Live OneCare.
- In the main OneCare window, in the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
- Click Restore files from a local backup.
- Click Express Restore.
- Click Restore files.
- Click Finish.
To select specific files to restore or to select a specific backup to restore from:
- Open OneCare.
- In the main OneCare window, in the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
- Click Restore files from a local backup.
- Click Custom Restore.
- To restore files from the most recent backup of your computer, click Restore files from the current backup on this computer.
–or–
Restore files that were backed up from another computer.- Click Restore files from backup of another machine.
- Click the backup that you want to restore files from.
–or–
Restore files from an earlier backup.
- Click Restore files from an earlier backup or a backup from another computer.
- Click the location of the backup device, and then click Next.
- Click the backup that you want to restore files from.
- To restore all files that are no longer on your computer, click Restore all missing files.
–or–
Restore specific types of files.- Click Restore files by file type.
- Next to the types of files that you want to restore, select the check boxes, and then click Next.
- Next to the files that you want to restore, select the check boxes, and then click Next.
- Decide whether you want to restore files that have the same name as files that are already stored on your computer, click the appropriate option, and then click Next.
–or–
Select the files that you want to restore.
- Click Search for files to restore.
- In the search box, type all or part of the name of the file that you want to restore, and then click Next.
- Next to the files that you want to restore, select the check boxes, and then click Next.
- Decide whether you want to restore files that have the same name as files that are already stored on your computer, click the appropriate option, and then click Next.
- Click Restore files.
- Click Finish.
Note
If OneCare detects that there are no appropriate files to restore, you won't receive the Restore files option.

I can't backup my new files how can I change the settings so I can just backup just my new files?

After the initial backup One Care will only back up new or changed files. Unless you choose tto perform a new complete backup One Care will only perform incremental backups.Monday, June 9, 2008 7:04 PMModerator

I had to replace my HDD. I have tried the above method to restore my files, but it does not work. OneCare tells me there is no backup device or network folder. How do I retrive these files?
Thanks!

On the computer with the new hard drive configure One Care backup to use the same network folder previously used. Back up your files to that folder then select restore files, restore files from another computer and you should be able to navigate to your previous backups and restore your files.Sunday, August 3, 2008 7:51 PMModerator

I will give that a shot. Thanks!!

Thanks for working with me on this issue.
I performed a backup and I can navigate to the backup folder on the network, but it still does not allow me to restore the files. I get the same message as before. I even copied the backup folder to a DVD, but I get a dialog box that says the disc is not a OneCare Backup Disc. When I try to restore, I use the Custom Restore option - I do not get a Restore files from a local backup as it states in the Help Center. I don't know if this makes any difference.
The "new"computer came up automatically in my Circle. The "old" HDD computer is still listed in the Circle but the status shows as "Unknown". Should I remove this "older" PC from the Circle? Should I name the "new" computer the same as the old?

I copied the old backup files to the new backup folder and was able to restore that way. Hopefully, that will take care of it.
Thanks!
