Automatic backup/duplication to external drive? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm the proud owner of a new HP X510 3TB Data Vault (aka HP MediaSmart Server EX495).  All working well out of the box and already used half of my storage space after initial PC backups!

Ideally I'd like to get an independent copy of all back-up data/shared folders stored on external drive which could be stored offsite for disaster recovery purposes, with regular rotation of external hard drives.

Is there an easy way of creating a regular (eg. daily) back-up of the duplicated shared folders onto an external hard drive?  Similarly can a regular back up of the back-up database be made to an external hard drive?

After a bit of reading and research I'm guessing the answer is "no" to both of the above.

I've installed BDBB which can allows you to create a manual copy of the back up database.  It would be preferably to be able to create a regular scheduled back-up of the back-up DB (perhaps weekly after the Sunday db clean-up).

For shared folders, it appears that you need to manually copy folders and files to the external drive.

Any good suggestions for a solution?  I'm sure this would be a fairly common request in this data-paranoid community!

  • There's nothing built into the product to do what you want, no. You can, if you like, create a scheduled task on the server that uses the same techniques as BDBB to copy the backup database to external storage (those techniques are detailed in this white paper), and for the shares you can also use a scheduled task to copy from \\localhost\sharename to the backup device(s). In both cases you will probably want to use some tool more robust than the DOS copy or xcopy commands; I use robocopy for all such tasks. :)
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks for your prompt response, Ken.

I had reached that conclusion myself, but was hoping there was something I was missing.

Sounds like an Add-In begging to be built by someone out there...
