  • Question

  • Hi,

Please don't send me to another forum - if possible - help right away.

We bought Lenovo computer this Sunday. It worked OK for 2 days. Today all of the sudden it decided to update BIOS and after that switch to Windows 10 -S mode. We're trying to get out of it, but unfortunately when we click 'Get' button it returns an error.

My husband cannot do anything (he needs Chrome and other applications), so what should we do now?

Please help to restore it to something normal with our control to which applications to run without MS making decisions in our behalf.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Actually, it's HP 15-EF00023DX model which we just bought at Best Buy last Sunday.

When I try to click on Free 'Get' button to switch out of this stupid -S mode we didn't ask for it says:

    'Try again later'

    Something happened on our end

    with only 'Close' button.

I really don't know what we're supposed to do now and I cannot spend the whole day on it :( Why MS decided to set this without asking for it and without an option to turn it off?

    Thanks.

  • If it were me I'd take it back to BB and let them deal with it. You can also contact HP support here.

  • Ok, I tried HP support. First virtual assistant, then an Indian guy who told me that in order to switch Windows mode I would need a different team (Level 2) and a chargeable service :(

Now I'm trying to figure out how to return it back to Best Buy :( [The store is closed, only curb-side pickup works, calling doesn't work either]

The unfortunate thing is that my husband originally opted out of that mode and already installed Chrome and set up all the accounts, etc. :(

If we're going to return it, how can we be sure to clean it, at least, so all our info is not going to be there?

    Thanks.

You can download the media here to clean install it.

and ask for more help here with installation / setup.

You can use chrome portable app on windows s mode:
    https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

I use it as my main browser, without any related to s mode. It is working without any installation and can be used directly from external disk/disk-on-key as well

  • In regards to the first part of your answer, did you read what I posted and do you think I'm stupid? As I said, I did all what your video showed but when I click on that 'Get' button instead of 'Install' I'm getting 'Something happened on our end' error and when it is also saying 'Working on it..' and nothing.

So, I cannot follow this genius in its stupidity advice from MS to switch out of this stupid mode.

May be we have to just patiently wait while MS resolves this error on its end, but it has been several hours already with the same result.

In regards to your other advice, I guess we can try that as the last resort.

UPDATE. Also tried to speak with Best Buy (I'm unable to setup an appointment from Best Buy link as it produces an error as well), but didn't get much help either except that we need to go to the store and try to speak with the manager (which is going to be problematic, I'm afraid). So tomorrow we're going to try to go there and attempt to return this or exchange, I guess.

Very unfortunate experience, but at least now I know that I'm supposed to be more diligent when buying anything and look which Windows version they are selling and if someone is going to sell this -S mode skip that right away.

  • Hi Dave,

    I got it working!!!

From another forum I was send to this thread

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_licensing/s-mode-get-button-will-not-work-and-i-cant-get-out/0ced73e9-27b1-47fc-b195-f7df63252d02?messageId=8b67e3ac-c2b3-44a7-a67f-caef658e687f&page=1

and then I tried to follow the steps from that first message (even though originally it looked too complex to me). From the first link from that message I got suggestion to try wsreset command. Once I did try it, it automatically removed S mode and now my husband can work again with Chrome.

I hope this experience is not going to be repeated because I wasted a lot of time on this issue today :(

  • I am glad to hear you solve the issue and now we know how to do it for the next person who will buy online on these days

I also had a very bad experience with shopping online in a place which I always shop offline. I got only part of the invitation but they charge me for the whole and there was no way to contact anyone in person. Only after I made my research on the employees there and got a personal number of someone (a local manager on one of their stores), I contacted him on his mobile and the issue was "solves" - they sent me the missing products but but no compensation for the direct damage I had and time spent or even an apology letter...
