OGA "Not Genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • For several years, I have been running Office 2003, Small Business Edition on my office desktop (a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP SP 2) with no problems.  After recently installing the XP SP 3, and running various updates (including what may have been a botched update to Office), Office Genuine Advantage began spitting out a "Not Genuine" message.  The certificate of authenticity sticker with the original disc has a Dell logo, and notes the softare as "Microsoft OFfice SBE 2003 with BCM".  The original disc does not appear to be any form of CD-or-DVD-R/RW, it lacks any evidence of burning, and the label is holographic in nature.  My assumption is thus that the software is from a legitimate dealer and that there is some form of error or other software conflict that is causing a false "Not Genuine" result.

I have attempted repairing the installation of the software by using the original disc.
I have not attempted to uninstall and reinstall the software, as there are customizations to Outlook that I do not want to risk losing.
Other computers from Dell in the office are running similar installations, and are not giving any "Not Genuine" messages.

  • Hello RandomExeter,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

The report is telling us that the only installation of Office on this particular computer is a nongenuine Volume Licensing installation of Office Professional Edition 2003, which was done with a widely pirated and now blocked Volume Licensing Product Key.

Could you do a quick experiment to verify that your copy of Office SBE 2003 is not installed on this computer?  Please download and run the Magical Jellybean Keyfinder (a small harmless utility that has been on the internet for years).  When it runs it should return a product key for Office that ends in 3HFDY, and not the product key that is for your Office SBE2003.

Please let us know the results, but do not post any product keys.

  • I dl'd Jellybean and took a look at the Key that it reported back.  It does end in a 3HFDY, and does not match the Product Key on the aforementioned Certificate.

    Hello RandomExeter,

I think that's Good News.  You should be able to Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the nongenuine Office Professional 2003 that's on the computer now, restart twice, then do a fresh installation of Office SBE 2003 with your genuine hologrammed discs and the product key that's on your Dell OEM Office SBE 2003 CoA.

This link will guide you to the files that hold your Outlook customizations:  http://www.backup4all.com/kb/backup-outlook-emails-and-settings-125.html  I would expect that backing up these files before uninstalling/reinstalling would be added insurance for retaining those customizations.

Post back to let us know how you do! :-)
