Syncing a German "Eigene Dateien" Folder with an English "My Documents" on XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

is it possible to sync folders with (language-related) different names?

I am running an English XP (with "My Documents") on my notebook and a German XP (with "Eigene Dateien") on my desktop.

Any chance, that I can get these two folders synchronised with Live Mesh?

    Thanks!

  • I have never done so, but there should be no reason that this will not work. Basically, add the folder to you Mesh from one PC and when offered to the other PC, click the light blue folder on the desktop and use the Browse button to merge to the existing location.

Do note, however, that Live Mesh is a beta and you should have you data backed up outside of a Mesh folder to protect it against loss.

You may wish to consider Live Sync - http://sync.live.com - which is a released and supported free service offering Peer to Peer sync. There is no Live Desktop copy of the folder available in Live Sync, though.

  • Steve,

    thanks for the quick answer!

I can - however - not try it until saturday, as I'm on a business trip this week.

I'll let you know, if it worked out!

(Although I doubt that it will work with all the subfolders, for example "My Pictures" which is "Eigene Bilder", or "My Music", etc.)

  • What may happen with the subfolders is that they will duplicate - you'll have an English language version on the German side as well as the German named folder and vice versa. That's my assumption, at least.

If you wish to proceed with this, you may want to set up sync at the sub-folder level to avoid the duplication of folders.

I'm going to mark my previous reply as the answer for now. We can change that after you report your results back here on the weekend. Have fun and back up that data before playing!
