    it has the product key and it's serial numbers and all those little stickers on the bottom.

    i saw a forum that said to use onecare so i went to revalidate my computer after it had a recent demise to a virus.

    i typed in the key on the bottom of my laptop and it said it was unvalid.

  • Chico,

    Curious did you reformat the computer because of the virus? I gathered this because you said "Recent Demise". One care should not complicate validation. Please run the MGA diagnostic test and post your resulst back here in this thread.  This will allow us to analyze the problems you are experiencing and provide feedback. Please follow the steps below:

    Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

    Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

    NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

  • Chico2700,

    The mgadiag report you posted was NOT generated on an HP laptop.

    HP computer products do not return the red data in the xml blob part of the report:

    Other data-->
    Office Details: <GenuineResults><MachineData><UGUID>{A026A8E6-C01B-4F28-9756-5D48810BEBD7}</UGUID><Version>1.7.0039.0</Version><OS>5.1.2600.2.00010100.0.0.pro</OS><Architecture>x32</Architecture><PKey>*****-*****-*****-*****-2B7Q8</PKey><PID>55274-640-0000356-23631</PID><PIDType>1</PIDType><SID>S-1-5-21-606747145-1935655697-1060284298</SID><SYSTEM><Manufacturer>MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD</Manufacturer><Model>MS-7211</Model></SYSTEM><BIOS><Manufacturer>Phoenix Technologies, LTD</Manufacturer><Version>6.00 PG</Version><SMBIOSVersion major="2" minor="3"/><Date>20051104******.******+***</Date></BIOS><HWID>13CC3FF70184223D</HWID><UserLCID>0409</UserLCID><SystemLCID>0409</SystemLCID><TimeZone>Eastern Standard Time(GMT-05:00)</TimeZone><iJoin>0</iJoin><SBID><stat>3</stat><msppid></msppid><name></name><model></model></SBID><OEM/></MachineData>      <Software><Office><Result>109</Result><Products/></Office></Software></GenuineResults>

    The Microstar MS-7211 motherboard is a 9-1/2" x 8-1/4" micro-atx motherboard.  That would be a pretty good trick to fit into a laptop computer.
