Dual installation of Office 2007 issue. RRS feed

  • Question

  • From having read the informational posts from the staff here several times, I think that I have figured out to do this much, though I do not understand the details at all. Not all that computer savvy, you see.

Now as to my issue. I have purchased a computer with Vista preinstalled on it, a PowerSpec model with Vista 32-bit, and a copy of Office Home and Student 2007. I was able to use the disk and the official product key to validate the copy of Home and Student that I purchased on my computer, but when I opened one of the pre-existing Office programs, Outlook, for example, I was prompted with another screen asking for my 25 digit product key. I entered the key I was given for Home and Student exactly several times but it still says that my key is invalid. I know for a fact that it is not as I visited the Genuine Microsoft site and the Office that I bought passed the test. The Office I purchased is valid, the preinstalled Office is what is failing the Genuine test.

I'm guessing that the product key I was given when I bought Home and Student is in no way similar to the one I need to activate the Office already on my computer, but I am unsure. Yes, I already had a link to a trial version on my computer, but I had not tried it beforehand. I just went ahead and installed my purchased copy. I first opened Word when I was asked for my product key, I entered it from the CD case, and Word now seems to open without asking for my key. Outlook would ask for my key and it seemed to be on my computer already. I open the Activation Assistant now asking to activate my key and it opens Word without asking for it at all.

When I purchased my computer there were no other CDs enclosed with it or information on Office product keys, I do not know if having Vista preinstalled is the reason for that or not. I am also hesitant to change any important registry information without okay or instructions from an expert to do so.

I have bought my computer about a month ago and am worried about what I read about the system 'shutting down' or rather denying access to the features that a Genuine copy has access to. I wonder, will this issue be resolved merely be uninstalling the trial version? And if so, could someone tell me which of these programs on my "Add Remove" menu are ACTUALLY the Trial version? I would not want to delete the wrong one... Since this is a pre-installed version of Vista I am unsure if I remove the existing trial version copy of Office that I would loose access to programs like Outlook altogether.

  • Uninstall all versions of Microsoft Office that are listed in Programs and Features.  Restart your computer, then install your purchased version of Microsoft Office.

  • Is MS Office 2007 a trial version?  If so you will need to definetly uninstall it.

    Thank you,

  • And you're positive that I'd still get to use the office programs that came with it originally?

  • I don't believe so... On the Add/Remove menu, I can see I have 3 Office related programs.

-Activation Assistant for the 2007 Microsoft Office suites
    -2007 Microsoft Office System
-Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007

There it doesn't say anything about trial for the Office programs that my computer came with... Since I have no product key for what programs came with my computer, would contacting my retailer be necessary at some point?
