PS 2007: Assignment actual start and finish do not roll up to task start/finish on fixed-duration task

Question
-
We are using fixed-duration, non-effort driven for all tasks (please, I don't want to debate this approach), and I'm perplexed by the following behavior.
Suppose I have such a task, with a single resource assigned. The task duration is set to 4 days, say 2/1 to 2/4.
The resource uses My Tasks to submit their task update, and enters 100% complete, start of 2/3, finish of 2/3; update is accepted and applied to the plan
We then see that the task is 100% complete, 100% work complete, starts on 2/1, and finishes on 2/4, duration 4d
The assignment is 100% work complete, starts on 2/3, finishes on 2/3, duration 1d
Why don't the assignment start and finish dates affect the task start and finish dates?

In that case you are updating to an out-of-bounds value by saying that the task's duration is no longer "fixed." Also, you should be updating actual start and actual finish when updating like this.

Because you are using fixed duration tasks. Unless the assignment actuals exceed the boundaries of the original fixed duration, the system respects the fixed duration. If this isn't what you want to see happen, then... OK, I won't go there.

I pretty much can accept that, but say in the Tasks page I instead had made the update to be 100% complete, start 2/2, finish 2/5 (let's assume it's a 7 day calendar workweek). The actual duration of the assignment is still 4 days, but the task then shows an actual start of 2/1 and finish of 2/5 and a duration of 5 days, so it doesn't respect the "fixed" duration in that case.
