Just to update as I read through some of the other threads, and I tried the following, but at point 4 I get "not enough quota available to run...."
Hello nicholasCR,
I believe your Vista's Licensing Store may have been damaged or corrupted at some point. I would like you to try the below set of steps. The first set will attempt to reset the Store and the second set will recreate it. Try the first set and if that doesn't work, move on to the next.
1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
3) Find the file cmd.exe
4) Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
6) Hit the Enter key
7) Reboot twice1) Return to the cmd windows
2) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
3) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
4) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
5) Type: cd %windir%\system32
6) Type: net start slsvc
7) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
8) Reboot Twice
9) You may be required to enter the Product Key again and then Activate
Please post if this resolves the issue or not,

Hi tamasine and Rudder,
Rudder: Thank you for posting those Licensing Store fix steps, that would have been my next post.
tamasine: Sorry I couldn't get your issue resolved. (and more sorry you had to reinstall, it's a pain) If you ever have a similare problem Activating, in the future, Activate by Phone, but don't say any thing to the Automatic Voice (or type anything into the phone) that should force the Automatic Voice to transfer you to an Activation Rep (a Live Person). They are the true experts in troubleshooting the activation process. They should either help, or if there is a larger issue, transfer you to a Vista Support persion.
Rudder: Sorry i couldn't resolve your issue, either. But from the "out of resources" error you were getting, I suspect a larger issue. It could be that during that Windows Update, an error occured and messes something up. If you believe an update has caused a problem, go to the Microsoft Update support page (http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527#tab0) there are a number of help doc there, but if they don't help, there is a link on the upper right of the page that will take you to (no cost) Windows Update Support.
Rudder: I also encourage you to look into Windows 7. I've been using it for some time now and I love it (and not just because I work here). It's not so different from Vista that you have to re-learn how to use it, but different enough (in a good way) that you can see the improvments. I've had no problems, even when I was running the Beta Builds.
Good Luck All,

Hello tamasine,
Your Diagnostic Report look fine. The only thing it's telling me is that you need to Activate. Normally you will get a text bubble on the right hand side of the task bar saying you need to activate. Click it and it should give you the option to Activate over the Internet or Activate by Phone. Try the Internet method, but if you get any error, do the 'By Phone' method.
If you are unable to find the 'You need to Activate' text bubble (or have any other troubles with the above instructions) here are alternate steps to do the 'Activate by Phone' activation.
Click the Start button, and type slui 4 in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.
Tell me if you have any problem,

Hi Darin,
thank you for quick reply! I have already done both of what you have suggested and it won't activate (either with my original or new key product). the corner of my computer also has a "not genuine" sign (came installed with computer a year ago - did this today after some automatic updates)
i have also tried a system restore and system scan - nothing has worked. Is the only thing left to reinstall?
thanksWednesday, August 12, 2009 8:40 PM -
Hi guys, I am getting a similar problem. 2 day old new HP DV 6 1260 Laptop with Vista 64 pre-installed and genuine id sticker attached. Was running a little weird out of the box, so did the usual driver updates for graphics, then Norton, and then was prompted to install some Windows updates, during the reboot process in the middle of 3 updates, a check disc screen comes up, shows 1 error found but was not displayed long enough to see what it was, another reboot and now the product key is no longer recognised.?
Tried activation, no joy, re-entering product key and nothing, currently can work online but can't get to the start button, or through explorer to reach the activation process.....has MS given out some dodgy update that is killing genuine installs?
Looks like my assumption that Vista was substandard might ring true, might just have to bin it and dig out one of the many legitimate copies of XP from my previous machines.

Guys this is so wierd....and annoying. It was obviously some dodgy MS updates causing the loss of, or deactivation of our licence codes!!! I gave up tying to fix it, got my XP disc out and fell asleep. This morning went to set up XP and got stuck in a loop where I was being advised I could no longer log on as out of resources.....tried a start in safe mode, it didn't go into safe, it logged on and opened all on its own the Genuine Advantage web page and asked to me active windows, which I clicked activate I got loads of resource errors and eventually a page refreshed saying something like "Thank you for activating windows", I rebooted and all seems ok, only thing spotted so far is all my customisations have gone to default.
So bad of MS to release something that has obviously wasted a good part of our lives and created some unwanted stress.
I am just waiting for the next hurdle they are going to throw at us. Will Ghost/Image/Back-up every day from now on...don't trust this Vista lark.
