This Copy of Windows is not Genuine Vista Build 6001: SOLUTION! RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi,

I had Vista one morning after not having done anything to the computer turn on and inform me in the bottom right hand corner "This Copy of Windows is Not Genuine" Vista Home Premium 32-bit (and I believe the number was 6001 or 6000, I can't quite remember).

Anyway, after phone calls to Microsoft and Dell the upshot was I was going to have to reinstall Vista. So I decided to try an in-place upgrade of Vista. The only problem was my CD was SP1 and the current version on the computer was SP2. So in order to force the Vista installation CD to do an in-place upgrade I was going to have to uninstall SP2 which I proceeded to do.

Well, this uninstallation FAILED and I thought, the ____ with this, I'm just going to downgrade to XP as I've had it with Vista in general. But, lo and behold, when the machine finally finished "reverting" from the update and booted up, THE ERROR WAS GONE!

Just to make sure I rebooted again and STILL GONE! (By the way, I also disabled Windows Defender as it MAY have been a most recent definition update that skidaddled it, but I'm not sure).

Anyway, you can try these steps perhaps and see if you can't get the problem fixed without having to do a clean reinstall of Vista
