Getting Genuine without losing family desktop settings-XP pro full retail RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have a machine that has a questionable copy of XP pro.  Can I do a repair install for XP pro from a NEW (full) retail version, allowing me to now be genuine, and to retain my current desktop and settings?  My family and kids would be disappointed if their individual accounts needed to be replaced.   I also like the idea of purchasing the full retail version as it could then be transferred-should my current PC give up the ghost.

I would like to avoid a clean install, as the PC is well configured, but I also want the benefits of being genuine.

    Thanks

  • Missed,

As a rule a repair reinstallation of XP retains user documents, settings, and installed programs.

There are exceptions and caveats, so read the following article carefully, and be sure to back up anything you would not want to lose:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us
