This copy of windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I've been provided with an MAK by my company (I know it is legitimate).

Basically what I've done is I have a laptop with Windows 7 Pro and I cloned the HD to a new HD for another laptop. When I boot up it gives me just a blue wallpaper, and in the corner it says: Win 7 Build 7600 This Copy of Windows is Not Genuine. The only thing I can access is task manager via Ctrl+Alt+Del (No start menu, desktop icons, etc.). How can I activate this copy of Windows with my MAK?

  • Hello DanielG123,

Cloning an existing installation to another hard disk drive and moving it to another computer is not a supported deployment method for any volume licensing version or edition of Windows.

You will have to (a) give the second computer to your IT support staff and have them install Windows using a supported deployment method or (b) acquire your organization's volume licensing installation discs and/or files and install it yourself on the second computer.
