A/V Edge and RFC1918 RRS feed

  • Question

We are planning an alternative Edge Server concept - not to publish them to the internet, but build a campus wide OCS

federation in our campus network with edge server deployment for each of the three companies.

My question now is (I heard it on a OCS course) - can an A/V edge server have an external IP address from a range that is RFC1918 compliant? Or does this cause problems with the internal routing of the A/V edge server?

  • If you are not using Voice or Video then the IP Address does not matter that much.

If you do use Voice or Video then you must have a routeable address.

Not using Internet does mean that you do not need public routeable address but then it must be routeable within your network

So avoid NAT at all times

I have not tested this but it should work if you do not need to connect in any way to the internet

  • I've tested an Edge Server deployment with a non-routable IP addresses on all external Edge interfaces and it is possible to configure it this way.  You'll just not have any functionailty from the A/V Edge role as mentioned above.
