KB905474 will not install even manually RRS feed

  • I have been trying to install this update both manually and through Windows Update without success. In both cases it ppears to copy some files and then it just stops and pops up a window that says" WgaNotify Setup canceled". I have been to the microsoft site and validated my copy of windows. I would appreciate any help provided. Here is the text of the diag report:

  • Hi JohninMemphis,

     

    We need to collect a bit more information. What we want to do is add a Registry Entry that when you try to install WGA Notification, a log file will be created with more specific details of the install:

     

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

     

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Genuine Advantage]

    "WGATray"=dword:00000001

    "WGAWizard"=dword:00000001

    "WGALogon"=dword:00000001

     

    Please copy the above Bold text, open Notepad and paste into the file.

    Save the file to your desktop with the name NotifierLog.reg

    Once the NotifierLog.reg file is sitting on your desktop, double click it.

    You will get a dialog box that asks "Are you sure you want to add the information to the registry?" click Yes.

    Now try to install WGA Notification (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498 is the location for the most recent version)

    Once the install stops, Click the 'Start' button, click 'Search' and search for the file name "WgaWizard.txt"

    Open the file, copy the text and paste it into this thread.

  • Thank you for the reply. I followed the instructions above. However, when I did the search for "WgaWizard.txt" I only found one empty file in the folder c:\Documents and Settings\George\Local Settings\Temp. Ideas?

  • The file wganotify.txt doesn't exist in the windows folder. I think it was meant to be wganotify.log. There I was able to find an error code why the installation was cancelled.

     

    I also went to the windows update website, but because the installation was cancelled and not failed, I didn't found an error code there.

     

    But I discovered the solution to my problem :-)

     

    Open regedit.

    Navigate to: HKEY_LOAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Notify\WgaLogon

     

    Right click on the folder symbol WgaLogon, and select "Permissions..."

    There I saw that no user had any rights on that folder what so ever (read nor write), so I gave the administrator all rights.

    After that the installation of the KB905474 update continued until the end :-)

     

    I still have one question though.

    What was the meaning of the instrutions posted by Darin Smith MS?

    I followed his instructions, but didn't found a file named WgaWizard.txt.

    The wganotify.log file also exists without the instructions.
