My Vista keeps shutting itself off..... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a problem.  I had Windows XP already on the computer, but I wanted to upgrade.  I bought the Vista software and  I allowed my teenage son to install Windows Vista Home Basic on my home desktop.  I believe he installed a clean copy instead of an upgrade, and now I cannot access windows at all, unless I access with reduced capability and then type in c:\ in the address bar and go in that way.  When I tried to validate, it gave me an error code: 0XC004F061 DESCRIPTION:  "...this specified product can only be used for upgrading not clean installation..."

In it's current state,  windows logs me off after a certain amount of time.  Is there a way to undo what my teenage son did and re-install the software as an upgrade?  Can this be converted?  I already tried to buy another product key online....didn't work.

    Please help!
