Windows update breaks SyncToy (x64, Vista 64 OS) 10 March 2009 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey, SyncToy seems to have stopped working (cannot find required MS sync framework components) since the Vista 64 updates on the morning of 10 March 2009. Have tried multiple re-installs but no joy, any chance of a quick fix? I rely pretty heavily on SyncToy to.. well, sync my work between my home PC and work. I'm pretty screwed without it.

  • ok, I got a fix for my problem (SyncToy 2.0 failing on Windows XP SP2 tithe same error message "The required Microsoft Sync Framework components for SyncToy cannot be found. Please re-run SyncToy 2.0 setup from the original location".

I use Add/Remove Programs to remove Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime v1.0 (x86) as well as Microsoft Sync Framework Services v1.0 (x86)  (WITHOUT removing SyncToy so as not to lose my folder pairs).
Then I re-installed SyncToy 2.0 (which also installed Sync runtime and services.
    and now SyncToy works fine.

  • Hi Viv,

Does Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime v1 show up in your installed programs?

  • Yup, I have the framework runtime and the framework services (both 1.0, x64) installed. The programn starts fine, but any action (run, create new folder pair etc) is met with this error:

SYNC: 03/10/2009 18:44:26:697: *** The required Microsoft Sync Framework components for SyncToy cannot be found. Please re-run SyncToy 2.0 setup from the original location.

  • Can you try manually uninstalling those 2 sync entries in your programs list then reinstalling synctoy and see if that helps.

  • Cheers for the reply, tried that already. Fixes I've attempted so far:

Uninstall everything (synctoy and both sync framework programns) then reinstall
Uninstall everything then install 32bit edition of synctoy
Run system restore to before update then reinstall synctoy

I'm just re-running the update now, going to try a registry cleaner and then re-install synctoy.

  • So when you restored to before the update did synctoy work again?

  • Nah, same problem. Just put it through the update again, and same problem as before. The .NET framework just got updated, right? As SyncToy tells me to check for stuff like that, I'm guessing it has something to do with SyncToy's functionality. Is there some kind of compatibility issue?

  • Hi, Viv

Can you try installing the latest updates and verify if it can work now ?
I've tried to repro your scenario, install a Vista Enterprise SP1 64-bit and install all the update to the latest up to now(March 16, 2009).
I do not find any of the stopped working of SyncToy.

    Thanks,
    Baoke

  • I've switched to another solution now (syncback freeware), but I'll re-install SyncToy and give it another go then get back to you. Any other information about my PC you would find helpful?

  • Same problem here.  Running XP SP2 and latest version of SyncToy 2.0.  For some reason, it does not work anymore.
    Same error message:
The required Microsoft Sync Framework components for SyncToy cannot be found. Please re-run SyncToy 2.0 setup from the original location

I re-installed SyncToy with no luck.
    Any solution please?

  • this is unusual to me. Can you try to reinstall you  .NET Framework? the .NET Framwork version must be later than 2.0.
And install all the update for it ?

    Thanks,

  • Hey, I still get the same problem after re-installs, de-installs of synctoy and the framework components in every combo I can think of. Hopefully some update will fix it, it in the meantime I've switched to syncback.

  • This worked like a Champ for me!
    Tks.

  • I also had the same issue while doing a clean XP-to-Vista upgrade. Uninstalling all the Microsoft Sync * entries in Control Panel, then redownloading and reinstalling the latest Synctoy 2.0 (which reinstalls MS Sync Runtime and Framework) solved the problem.
