Pingability Of xxx.HomeServer.com? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Account name = "HuiNalu".

From my home LAN, I can ping it:
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    C:\>ping huinalu.homeserver.com

Pinging huinalu.homeserver.com [173.49.142.131] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 173.49.142.131: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

    But from work, I cannot:

        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

    c:\>
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

I note that the name resolves to an IP address in both cases.

No problem logging on to computers served by WHS/HuiNalu.

Should I normally be able to ping HuiNalu.HomeServer.com from outside my home LAN?

    If not,
    • Corporate firewall issues?
    • ISP limitation?
    • Something else?

  • I'm betting on a corporate firewall issue. Try it from Starbucks instead.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Hey Pete, I would bet that your modem/router or modem is set to not respond to pings on the wan port. This is the default setting for most of the modem/routers I have dealt with. This will prevent anyone getting a response if they attempt to ping your wan ip address. In most modem/routers it would be in the wan settings sub-menu, probably under an advanced settings menu. On my Netgear DGN2000, under the advanced section of the menu is a "WAN Setup" and on that page there is an item with a check box called "Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port" if it's unchecked the router won't respond to any ping packets it receives. Is there a reason you want to ping your home server from work ?

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Nathan.
