Windows Home Console loses Connection at random RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am running WHS on one of those small Acer EasyStore Home Servers, and other than really this problem, it's been running flawlessly and has done all the jobs its needed to. It's in a small-business environment, basically just four computers that access files and save to the server, then we backup at the end of the day. It's really a file server for us. The server is up to date, and on this pc I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium.

On this computer I run the Console, and we use it as the administrating PC for the server; There are basically two main problems that have to do with connectivity.

    1) It runs fine, but it seems to randomly "lose connection" to the home server (Through the console) forcing us to have to relog into the console. This is problematic as we do backups of the server fairly frequently, and it seems to cut off the backup, for that reason we had to manually copy the files to a USB drive. It does back up fine to its internal backup drives though. If we leave it connected to the console, then come back on monday, it's more often than not disconnected. It does no automatic backups, as the client PCs have nothing important on them, it's all on the server. The following is the message we get. We still have complete access to the server, as in, we can still get the files and such, but the home console just randomly drops.

    2) Occasionally, after the above happens, when I go to log back onto the console the screen just goes blue and nothing comes up. There is no error message, nothing. I've tried clicking "reset console" or whatever before logging in. Does nothing. The only fix that i've found is to restart the WHS, which is very problematic for us. We use AutoCAD, and all our blocks etc run off the server (so they are constantly updated) and if the server goes down AutoCAD loses all of its settings. Its tedious to redo, so we have to close AutoCAD on all our PCs before a server reboot. This can take 10 minutes to do, plus the 5 minutes for a reboot. Then another 5-10 to get things back running smoothly.

If you need anymore info, just ask.

  • 1) may indicate that the server has gone into standby at some time. Have you disabled LightsOut (Settings, LightsOut, Action set to "Do Nothing")? Otherwise LightsOut will suspend your server 10 minutes after the last client has been shutdown or suspended. BTW: There's an update for LightsOut which fixes a bug on the Acer: http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?showtopic=8906

    2) You may try to connect to your server using Remote Desktop when this happens. Should this fail also, please have a look at the event log on your server.

  • 1) It is set as "Do Nothing" I'll try the update though

    2) It connects to remote desktop fine, but when I try to open the console remotely it just brings up the language bar, but the console doesn't show up.

EDIT: Okay, it's updated. We'll see if that fixes the problem.

  • No, I don't think that fixes the console problem. Please post your latest homeserverconsole.xxx.log here for further investigation. The log can be found in the %qlogs% directory. Simply click Start->Run and enter %qlogs%.

  • I'm still having this problem, having to restart the server is really annoying. Do you know how long it's been a known issue? I've tried to find others who have the same problem but can't.
