this copy of widows is not genuine!?!? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have had my dell since 2010 and everything seemed fine. I open my computer today to check my email and I notice the screen looks different. My wallpaper is gone and it is replaced with a black screen all my icons are there but in the right hand corner it is saying:

     Windows 7

    build 7601

This copy of windows in not genuine

And; yes I turned it on and off again. I did the recommend updates, and restarted twice then when that did not work I googled my problem and came to lost of forms that have the same issue as I do. so I copied the Microsoft genuine advantage diagnostic tool under windows.

  • OEM SLP copies of Windows like yours need to link with the SLIC table in the BIOS in order to remain activated.  The manufacturer has provided a back up product key for when this fails.  Find the COA sticker affixed to the bottom of your computer or in the battery compartment.  Copy the product key.  Click Start, type "slui.exe 3" and hit Enter.  Follow the instructions.

What does slui.exe do exactly? About a week, while starting up, my buit PC triggered safe mode . It ran chkdsk and that file was corrupted, and which gave the initial warning "Your version of windows may not be genuine" after rebooting from safe mode. After installing SP1, I now get the black screen of death with the typical "Windows 7, Build 7601, May not be genuine." Note that sometime before that I updated my MSI MoBo BIOS. Now cant put my finger on what exactly to do because both the BIOS table and slui.exe maybe the problem. MADia as follows...

  • It is the Software License User Interface.  It presents various screens and messages needed for users to activate Windows.

The problem is that OEM SLP copies of Windows need to read the SLIC table in the BIOS in order to remain self-activated.  Yours is not seeing it, apparently because the software protection service is not working.

BIOS valid for OA 2.0: yes, but no SLIC table

The System File Checker may be able to replace the file.  Click Start, type 'cmd' in the Search/Run box, and right click on the CMD icon at the top of the results pane.  Select Run as Administrator.  When the cmd window opens type 'sfc /scannow' at the prompt and hit Enter.  When the scan completes close the cmd window.

You are using an OEM_SLP Key on a retail motherboard - this can never work.
Please post to your OWN NEW thread if you need more details

This is a OEM SLP key for an Asus computer. It is invalid for use on an msi motherboard.

you need to use a full retail license in your case.

OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows 7 looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)
