Live Mesh vs Live Sync RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I just came across Windows Live Sync https://sync.live.com/learnmore.aspx and was wondering how Live mesh differs. The functionality appears to be the same but live sync seems to be intergrated into more Windows Live services eg Live toolbar and Skydrive and also offers functions like folder sync over Live mesh which seems to be more standalone. Is there going to be some convergence of the two in the future? What are the pros/cons of each service compared?

  • i'd like to know this too.  Hard to know what's going to survive & what's not... why have different groups developing apps that have such substantial overlapping functionality?  It suggests total chaos at MS.

  • I guess live mesh has a bigger picture than live sync service.

As live sync provide file sync service as its fundermental service, live mesh is kind of a MS version google docs with some accessory services such as file syncing. The primary idea of live mesh is to create a platform helping users edit and process their docs, photos and etc online.

  • There is some overlap in functionality and I'd expect some sort of convergence or consolidation in the future. But as it is today Live Sync and Live Mesh each have some unique features.

    Important features in Live Mesh:
In my opinion one of the most important goals for Live Mesh is to work smoothly for devices that are not constantly connected to the internet. Applications that use Mesh (and it's meant to be a platform for applications) can continue to work even if the machine looses internet connection, and it will bring the data up to date when the device is back online.
The Live Desktop is another unique feature of Live Mesh. There are applications under development that can run directly on the Live Desktop (i.e. in the browser).
And finally, Live Mesh has Remote Desktop access built in, which is different from Windows' Remote Desktop functionality in that it can use an external relay server. So it works in situaltions where Windows Remote Desktop is blocked by a firewall.
Oh, and Mesh supports Mac OS and Windows Mobile.

  • Stefan's overview of Live Mesh compared to Live Sync is excellent, but I'll add that Live Sync is a peer to peer sync program exclusively. Live Mesh uses the cloud as an intermediary. The fact that we can do sync via Live Mesh, including peer to peer is because that functionality was built on top of the Live Mesh platform. So, in effect, Live Mesh as we are using it today is Sync, but there is promise of much more to come.

  • I'm currently running Live Synch between my desktop and my laptop.  I don't understand the difference between Live Synch and Live Mesh.  Should I switch to Live Mesh?  Help!

  • Live Sync synchronises files between devices. All devices must be online and connected.

Live Mesh stores your documents online and syncs between devices as soon as they become available. In addition, Live Mesh is your online desktop. In the future, you will be able to run applications based on silverlight 4 inside live mesh desktop, your mobile and your actual desktop pc.

Live Mesh is going away. The new Live Sync is built on the Live Mesh architecture.
