    Question

  • Pc can only be started in safe mode and is in normal mode forcing to go to Windows Genuine.

I wish I would manfacture cars for Microsoft and block them in the middle of the road telling them there is something wrong.

  • Hello another-user,

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:

    File Scan Data-->

    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\user32.dll[6.0.6000.16438]

    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\imagehlp.dll[6.0.6000.16470]

This line means that the critical system files user32.dll and imagehlp.dll either :

    a)     Has been tampered/modified/become corrupt to the point that its Signature Hash no longer matches the Signature Hash listed in Vista's System Catalog.

    Or

    b)     The files have recently been updated but the file's Signature Hash was not updated, in Vista's System Catalog to reflect the updated file's new Signature Hash.

Vista compares a Critical System file's Signature Hash with the Signature Hash listed in its System Catalog to determine if that Critical System file has been tampered with. Normally, I do this by having the user re-install a past Update that contained that file. Unfortunately, I can not find any past updates that contain these file, so I only have a few additional options to resolve the issue.

    A)    Repair Windows using System Restore:

    1.     Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

    2.     Go to Control Panel

    3.     On the left hand side of the Controlee panel window, Click on "Classic View"

    4.     Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"

    5.     On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore

    6.    Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

    6.     Click the "Next" button.

    7.     Reboot back into Normal mode

    8.     Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode

         B)    Reinstall Vista:

I do not like suggesting this as a fix, but if option A) don't fix the issue, then that is the only other option, that I know of, that will.

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith

  • Thanks a lot for your help.

I have removed MS-office 2003 and restarted the system but it still blocks.

How do we prove we have a valid license?

  • Hello another-user,

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:

    File Scan Data-->

    Thank you,

  • Darin,

    Thanks again for your help.

Maybe I missed something but I tried various times in safe mode to get the Backup & restore Center" and "classic view" but I cannot get it when working in safe mode. Are you sure these options are available in Safe mode?

I tried in reduced mode, to do the steps indicated and I thought it was working fine. We could start the Pc twice normally but while I tought it was fixed, we got again the problem few hours after.

I run again the diag and got the same message regarding the two files above.

    Any idea is welcome!

    Thanks,

  • Hi another-user,

Yes, I had (and have) tested to confirm you can access the Backup&restore center in safe mode.

      1) Go to Control Panel

      2) On left side of Contol Panel window are two lines of text:

    "Control Panel Home"

    and

    "Classic View"

      3) Click "Classic View"

      4) You are now in the "Classic View" area of the Control Panel windows

      5) Double-click the icon "Backup and Restore Center"

But, if you were able to follow the steps in normal mode and it worked, but the issue returned, it sounds like you may have Windows Update set to automaticly download and install updates and I think that maybe one or two of the updates is, for some reason, failing part way thru the update process and that is causing the issue.

What I suggest is that you retry the Backup & Restore Center steps, that you did before, and after that, install Service Pack 1 for Vista from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en

If you still have problems, I would suggest creating a (no cost) support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 to continue troubleshooting the issue.

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith
