  • Question

  • I have downloaded Money Plus Sunset Deluxe for the first time but get an error message when I try to sign in with my live email account which firstly says that the file cannot be created because I have some incorrect characters (which I haven't!) and then when I click on that box to 'okay it', another one then comes up which says that my 'email address or password is wrong'. Which again, it isn't!

I am operating with Windows 10.

    Can anyone help please?

  • Are you trying to make a new empty file, or are you trying to open an existing Money file?

If existing, is that existing Money file from North America, or elsewhere?

If you are making a new file, do not choose "I want to use a Windows LiveID". Instead choose one of the other two choices.

I have a similar problem but have been using Money (UK Edition) for many years and about a week ago started to get "The e-mail address or password is incorrect. Please try again" error message (problem occurs in Windows 10 and on an old Vista laptop). I went down the "Forgot your password?" route on the off-chance that my memory had failed but to no avail. The response above suggests that there is an issue with using the Windows Live ID (described as Microsoft .NET Passport in the version of Money that I am using) but as I am trying to access an existing file rather than making a new file is there any solution?

Pete, your situation is different. Money 2005 UK does not have a way to remove the LiveID even after you get into your file. What you can do is to sign in offline.

Disconnect from the Internet.  Pull your ethernet cable or turn off your modem -- whatever it takes. (that may not be needed, but it could)  Start Money, click below the password field to select "I want to sign in to Money directly, without access to all online services." then click Next.

Since you already changed your LiveID, use the credentials that were in effect at the time that you saved that Money file.  Your attempt to change your LiveID had no effect on Money.   Once you get in, the only way to remove the LiveID is to export your Money accounts to loose QIF files, and import all at once into a new file. You would lose some things in the process, but you would have a clean file.

The password is case-sensitive.  If you are not sure of your credentials, write down what you remember.  Consider permutations.
Check your notes.  You will not get into the file without those credentials in effect when the file was saved.

I suggest copying your *.mny and more recent *.mbf files to other media in case something happens. Disks fail. Mistakes happen. If you think you are using the correct credentials, try your newest or second-newest backup files (*.mbf). If you choose a new filename during the restore, it will not overwrite your existing *.mny file.

  • Just for the record in case anybody else encounters this issue - I found a relatively recent backup file that I was able to access (using the password that I knew should have worked on the main file) added the missing data back in and saved it to a different location to the original (all seemed fine at this point). Trying to access this new file then presented the original issue again "The e-mail address or password is incorrect. Please try again". Reverting to the backup once again I accessed the Password Manager (File > Password Manager) and removed the link to the .NET Password (replacing it with the Money Password) which works fine. To complete my investigation of this problem I tried to change back to the .NET Password once again and received a "Your sign-in information could not be verified. Please try again later" error message. This leads me to conclude that something has changed in the last month which is preventing Money from using the .NET Password any more (whether this is specific to the UK version or specific to hotmail.co.uk email addresses I don't know)
