  • Question

  • Hello,

I was wondering if someone could assist me on what happens in a maintenance window like the one below. We are running in HA mode front and back end VM servers. If I am reading this right they will reboot each server 30 minutes apart or will they reboot my whole Tenant with a 30 minute outage?

Upcoming maintenance may impact     multi-instance deployments of Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines (IaaS) and     Cloud Services (PaaS)

    Azure

During the planned maintenance window, Web   and Worker role instances and IaaS Virtual Machines (VMs) in an availability   set may experience a reboot. Each instance that reboots will have   approximately 15 minutes of total downtime. Temporary disk and Azure Storage   disks will be preserved during the maintenance. We expect the 15 minutes of   maintenance on each instance to be executed on your instance within 72 hours   of the start time (listed below).

For Virtual Machine instances in an availability set, there will be at least   a 30-minute interval between each VM in an availability set (if they are in   different update domains). This enables data to be replicated between   instances for high availability.

The complete list of affected Virtual Machines in your subscription is   located at the bottom of this email. The following are the planned   maintenance windows for the update:

    Microsoft   Azure Virtual Machines (IaaS)
Only virtual machines inside availability sets are impacted in this upcoming   operation; it does not affect virtual machines outside of availability sets.   Single VMs in an availability set are also impacted in this maintenance   operation. For availability sets that have more than 5 instances (by   default), VMs in the same update domain of an availability set may be offline   at the same time. VMs that are in different availability sets may be offline   at the same time.

    Microsoft Azure   Cloud Services (PaaS)
All Cloud Services with Web and Worker roles referenced below will be   rebooted during the maintenance window. VMs belonging to the same role and   the same update domain may be offline at the same time. Cloud Services can   use reboot and start event handlers for role instances, as described in the   documentation referenced in the “Learn More” section below.

Maintenance is scheduled to only impact     one region at a single time in each regional pair. This enables you to deploy     VMs across those regions to reduce the impact of the maintenance.
