Thanks for the additional information. I just wanted to rule out 3rd party security as the issue.
See if the manual process of deleting the registry keys after an uninstall and then reinstalling resolves it: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/e22e0115-98d1-47eb-b495-ff3e10acb0a6
Do you have any XP machines in your Mesh? if not, you may want to have a look at the Live Sync beta - Windows Live Essentials Wave 4, since Live Mesh as it exists today will be replaced by it.

Did anything else change when Live Mesh suddenly "fell over" and failed to start?
What security software? What operating system and service pack level?

Hi Steve,
I'm running windows 7 ultimate (32-bit). Not sure what patch level I'm on - I run update pretty aggressively. I'm using windows firewall and security essentials from MSFT.
Thanks

Im also getting the failed to start now. I have win 7 64 bit, finished testing some programs so decided to return to a working image from 12.september fully updated. (mesh was working before)
After restore mesh was working as normal, there was 7 windows updates so installed them.
After a reboot, mesh fails to start. Using security essentials and win 7 firewall.
MAybe try a reinstall of mesh to see if that works
