Autoplay interfered with backup RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I had a problem with backing up to DVD RW disks, after inserting a new blank disk, backup would say "the drive is in use by another program". Turns out, the "Autoplay" function would activate when a new disk was inserted in the drive, and Autoplay was interfering with Backup. Workaround was to switch off the autoplay function for that drive.

I successfuly switched off autoplay, and now backup works fine. Odd thing is, now I can't remember how I did it, and I could not find any info on how to switch off Autoplay!.

  • Thanks for reporting your solution.

In XP, right click the CD/DVD drive in Windows Explorer and you will see the Autplay tab.

In Vista, there is an AutoPlay applet in Control Panel.

I have XP, but the "Autoplay tab" you mentioned is only for configuring autoplay,

it has no option for switching off autoplay!

All I remember about switching off autoplay is it had a window that listed all possible drives from a:\ to z:\ and allowed setting certain options for those drives.

  • Here are the steps to turn on/off Autoplay for XP:

    1. Open My Computer, or Windows Key + E to see hard disks and removable storage devices
    2. Select properties of the DVD+RW
    3. Select AutoPlay tab (mentioned by Steve)
    4. Select appropriate content type - Music, DVD, etc.
    5. Click Radio button for Select an action to perform, select Take no action option.
