Can't open old files

  I have old files that were stored on an old computer from around 2001 time period. I transferred them to an exterior hard drive and they opened up fine. Now when I go to open them up, I get a message that says I need to find a system to use to open them up. Adobe Acrobat Reader was suggested and I agreed. Now I get a message that says the reader can't open up the file because it was either damaged or not supported. I am not getting any other options for ways to open up the files. All of my old files give me this message.
