The same situation looks with Windows Server you have licensing but it will not restrict you to connect more users then you have licenses. The same situations is with Dynamics CRM. You have a license and you must to care about it to not have more users/devices (which can be mixed in the same installation) then licenses. See that information about Device CAL is not appear anywhere expept licensing documents and price lists.

Hi,
All licenses are applied using the deployment Manager (On the CRM Server). The link below explains where you can find your license Key.

As far as I know there are no Device CALs for MS CRM. You can only apply User CALs.

In the price list there is Device CAL:
Device CAL: This is tied with the Device i.e. CRM can be accessed from only one device. It is useful in environments such as Call Centers.
but because MS CRM using AD to authenticate users it is user-based authentication. Device CAL is working probably like External Connector license so you don't have any code. You need to only make sure that number of device which using CRM is not higher that number of licenses.

Thanks for the answer. I guess what I do not understand is if, as you say, a device CAL is like the external connector and has no code as such there still must be a way to set up users that will access CRM via that device. For example, 3 users, all setup in AD, will be accessing CRM individually from one device. As soon as you set those 3 users up in CRM they consume 3 CALs so there must be a mechanism to set up a device 'user' and then possibly assign the users to that device. I have looked high and low for details about how you do this and I simply cannot find any information on what you need to do to configure this from within CRM 4.

I must admit I was sceptical of this being the case but you are absolutely right, I have just had confirmation from Microsoft. Thanks for your answer.
