  •  I keep getting the error below:

    This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation because the validation process could not be completed.

    Any help in fixing this is truly appreciated.

  • Using your Dell Windows XP Reinstalltion CD, you'll need to perform a "repair install".

  • Hello Ihechi,

    Please remove Office Professional Edition 2003, Office FrontPage 2003 and Office Visio Professional 2003 then try and re-validate.  These products are non-genuine. You should be able to pass validation @ this point.

    Unfortunately, after removing the items you listed, I still get same error message; it still did not pass validation.

    I see several CDs come with the laptop but none says reinstall xp.

        Do you still have the original Dell Recovery Reinstallation CD?  You should have received one @ the time of physical purchase from Dell. Next if you have the original Dell recovery reinstallation CD please visit "Restoring Your Computer's Software to the Factory Settings" located @:

        You will be provided with a step by step process how you can reformat the computer back to factory settings. Please keep in mind that any and all of your files such as pictures, documents, spreadsheets and Internet Explorer Favorites will be flushed unless you take the time and physically back up all the data. Please back any and all data that is important prior following the directions Dell's Tech support site provides.  

        Should you not have the original software please contact Dell Technical Support @ 800- 624-9896 or http://search.dell.com/index.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&ec=k&ira=False&cat=sup&advsrch=False
     and order the recovery software for your model computer. Another alternative may be to visit Dell Community Forums @ http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/. Maybe you can search for replace a lost Dell system restore disk.

        Also I have foun more information which may assist you located @:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx#install .  Also you can visit http://support.microsoft.com/ and click on the operating system and follow threads which you need help with. 


    Please contact Dell and order the recovery software. You will need the service tag number of your system which should be located on the back of your tower.

    You can request backup discs if you no longer have the original media installation CD/DVD:

  • Thank you Carey, and all who contributed to this thread so far.

    I ordered a backup CD from Dell and surprisingly, I received it the next day - great service you would say!

    Anyway, I attempted to reinstall it but got a message that the version I have (already installed) is not upgradable.

    Does this mean that I have I have to reformat the hd using those 6 setup disks?

    Please contact Dell Technical Support I previously posted. They are responsible for providing Technical Support as they are teh Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
