Disk Read Error on re-boot after windows update RRS feed

  • Question

  • I received 5 updates to11/11/08. I installed them and when it completed, it asked me to re-boot. When I did, i got an error message "Disk read error - press ctl+alt+del to re-boot". I'm running XP on a dell with a Maxtor HDD. When I boot using the XP CD, the repair console recognizes the drive and sees the previos installation.

    Has anyone else experienced this?
What happened with these loads that trashed my drive?
    How can I fix it?

    The updates are as follows:
Security update for MS XML Core Services 4. SP2 (KB954430)
    Security Update for WinXP (KB954459)
Security Update for Win XP (KB955069)
Security Update for Win XP (KB957097)
Win Malicious Software Removal Tool  November 2008 (KB890830)

These updates are pending on my laptop also...is it safe to run the update?
