Where did the Chinese characters come from? RRS feed

  • Question

  • All
An interesting error log entry was noticed in the Application event viewer log. The text is as follows

Cannot connect to SMTP host 睳煨硥㌰眮扢湩⹣摡.

I'm not sure why the system is looking for this host or where it is configured to to look for the host.

    Has anyone seen this?
    Is this a security concern?

    Thanks

  • If a Ascii encoding is viewed as unicode you can see chinesse characters.  Are you getting the infoamtion from a dll or is this coming from your .net code.

  • SMTP is a mail server protocol. I'd be careful that your system hasn't been taken over and being used to send spam mail through it, or otherwise using SMTP at that server for some reason.

  • This really doesn't look like .NET issue. If you believe that it is comming from a .NET application, then please post more information about the application.
If you are just worried in general about unknown entries in your application logs, then run Firewall, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware or try to track down which application logs that entry (ProcessExplorer-like tools might help you).
