Your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following stickies.... .........

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

The product ID -068- Indicates a not for resale MSDN account. If you are not the account holder and you purchased this in a retail box, the box and it's contents are counterfeit. Demand an immediate refund from the seller

    For more information see this:

     http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/a2444f34-0aff-4f29-a8ac-67e28b0c0285

To see how good these counterfeits are becoming, see:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzqNNiOM0cs

You will have to purchase a legitimate windows from a legitimate retailer or revert to the windows your computer came with.

  • The video was very helpful . I definetly have a counterfeit. Not much to do, I am well outside (several months) buyer protection. Can I purchase a key from Microsoft and keep this install or do I have to start completely over?

  • You cannot purchase just a key but you don't have to reinstall either.  Just buy a full license copy of Ultimate and use the product key to cure the non genuine status.  Press WinKey + Pause/Break and go to the bottom of the system properties page.  Click on the Change Product Key link.  If you purchase any other edition you will need to reinstall.  If you purchase from the Microsoft Store online you will have your key by download and can be done in minutes.  Be sure to download the .iso files and burn to dvd.  The .iso files should be SP1 integrated images so you will be able to use them for repair installs where your original SP0 dvd would not work.

  • Fortunately, most of the 'good' counterfeits appear to be clean - but I would always advise a reinstall with known-good media at the first opprotunity.

The question then becomes  "Do you really need Ultimate?"  The answer is almost certainly 'No' !

There are very limited advantages to Ultimate over Pro (Btlocker being the main one) - and a high cost for them.

Either way, you cannot legally purchase 'Just a Key' - it HAS to come with accompanying software, even if only by download (and then t HAS to come from MS).

You need to purchase a Full Retail pack of whichever edition of Windows you opt for.

  • There is about $30 difference between Ultimate and Professional so that is not a big deal.  However, Pro will receive five years longer support than Ultimate (Ultimate is classed as a consumer sku for support purposes) so I recommend Pro.  If you do reinstall, however, save yourself some money and first restore your original Windows so you can buy an Upgrade Windows 7 license instead of paying for a full license.

I got stung by this scam also and I elected to purchase a full license copy from the Microsoft Store and just change the product key.  I have had no issues.  The dvds in the counterfeit box are just copies of authenic dvds.  You can always try just changing the key and then use all the online virus scanners you can find until you are comfortable with what results.

Ultimate full license is about $350 with taxes from the MS store but the peace of mind is worth it.
