Replaced motherboard, and case a a few weeks ago, but now I get the genuine error message RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I recently replaced my case, motherboard and CPU (a couple of weeks ago), and all of a sudden I now get the "not genuine" message.  Is it because it's not running on an ASUS pc any more? :(  If it's truly a problem, will buying windows 8 fix it?  I love win7 and didn't think that upgrading my pc would do this, but I do see that it says OEM in the poroduct id.  Will it let me upgrade to win 8 with this problem still existing?

I still have the pc case with the windows sticker on it if that helps.

    Thanks.

  • Your OEM SLP version of Windows is only licensed for the hardware upon which it was originally installed.  When you changed motherboards, your system became a new computer.  What you need is a Retail version of Windows which can be transferred between systems.  It may be possible to still get a Retail copy of Windows 7 but be careful from where you get it because there are a lot of frauds out there.
