Windows 7 Build 7601, Windows is not genuine (but it is) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all. I reformatted my son’s laptop then realized he had not made a restore disk. I downloaded a copy of windows 7 32 bit from a link I found on a microsoft forum.

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/where-to-download-windows-7-install-already-have/a6e36b88-b354-4b2e-9ba2-7d5906a968be

A few months later he is getting this error saying it’s not genuine but I know it is. I purchased this laptop with windows installed new for him a year or more back.
Can anyone please help me sort this out?
Thanks in advance for any guidance!
    Dave

  • Yes, the key is different from the COA sticker and cannot be used to activate.  What you need to do is order recovery media from the computer's manufacturer or from a third party like Recovery-Disks.com.  It must be for your make and model.  No product key will be required since it is built into the recovery.

    Thanks for responding Noel.

Dam! The paper sticker is on the bottom of the laptop and mostly worn off. I used a program from downlod.com called product key finder to pull it from software before the format knowing I could not read it. Boy I thought I was smart! LOL

So the key I extracted is different then the sticker key right? hmmm
What if I tried to find a downloadable win7 disk from lenovo the laptop manufacturer and reinstall over this do you think that might work?

    Thanks again!
As Colin says - you need to order a set of the media from Lenovo.
The Recovery Media will not allow an over-the-top install, it would have to be a Clean reformat/reinstall.
If you *really* don't want to do that, you could purchase a Full Retail license for Win7 Home Premium, and use the Key from that to make the current install genuine - but that is likely to cost something approaching the cost of a new machine.

The installation is using the OEM_SLP Key for windows - which can only work when used in conjunction with the manufacturer's proper Recovery media.
You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case, and then probably activate by telephone.

You can change the Key to your valid one very simply.
    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 3
    and hit the Enter key
    - follow the instructions.
You may need to activate by telephone.
If you are not offered the option, then use the same method, but with
    SLUI 4
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.
