Vista not genuine error after reinstalling

    Question

  • I had to restore to factory default config due to some BIOS problems. I've had Vista on this laptop for 3 years. After re-installing and entering the correct product key, I got a "Windows not Genuine" error. I've run the MGA diagnostics tool and have the results availabe. I can't paste the results here yet though until this post is accepted.

  • Your report shows the installation as being properly activated using the COA Key - are you still seeing non-genuine notices?

  • Oh ya i forgot that i used the phone automated confirmation id tool via slui.exe 4. However even though it shows as activated after doing that, it still prompts me to get a genuine version and won't allow me to do any windows updates. Error code 80072f8f when i try to download windows updatrs (note: the clock is showing correct time).

  • You should attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate  using Internet Explorer, and see what happens - if it fails, go to www.microsoft.cenuine/diag and see what that has to say - post back with results, and a new MGADiag report, and attempt Windows Updates again.

  • Ha Ha! The diag prompted me to recheck the time/date. It turns out it's not 2008 after all is it! I checked the time/date a couple times before but never thought to check the year!! Thanks very much for your help, I appreciate it!!!
