Removing disks and files on c:\data

Question
-
Had 3 disks and have now removed 2 of them.
Remainig disk is c:\ and d:\data.
On that d:\data is all my files - well it seems to be, however no one can be opened (cannot open c:\data\...., due to having removed the other 2 disks I guess).
Will it then be safe to delet this c:\data?
Reason is that I want to install another OS, though keep my files, movies etc (still on the other 2 disk fully intact i guess).Friday, August 28, 2009 10:20 PM

why is it that WHS store files on the system disk?
some installations of Windows Home Server are delivered with only one disk. Historical versions without Power Pack 1 did heavily use the storage on drive D:, which has been changed with the mentioned Power Pack.
Unfortunately no feature to relocate the data on that volume exists without much manual work (i.e. deleting the contents of the shared folders and copy it back later).

It's not safe to delete any files on the C:\ drive. The best practice is to manage everything on the server from the console.Saturday, August 29, 2009 1:59 AM

If by "removed" you mean "disconnected", then probably all your files are on those two disks. In some circumstances, though, Windows Home Server will store files on the system disk. You can see what remains on your system disk by looking in D:\DE\Shares\etc.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by Ken WarrenModerator Saturday, August 29, 2009 2:20 AM

why is it that WHS store files on the system disk?
It will store data there only when necessary. However, it will not move the data once it's there either. So if, for example, at one point you were running out of server space (forcing WHS to store data on the primary drive), then added another drive for more storage, any new data added to the server will end up on the new drive. However, it will not move data from the primary drive to the new drive.Saturday, August 29, 2009 1:19 PMModerator -
