Are you one of those types who uses the keyboard instead of the mouse whenever possible? If you prefer to keep your fingers on the keys to launch programs, you might find the Registry's App Paths settings useful. This area of the Registry lets you assign default paths to common file names, making the Start, Run dialog box much more useful.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\

With the App Paths folder selected, choose Edit, New, Key. A new subfolder appears. Give it the name of the program to which you're assigning a default path--shazam.exe, in this example. With your new subfolder selected, double-click the Default value in the right pane and enter the full path name of your app in the resulting dialog box. Choose OK.

To test your new magic path, press Windows-R and type the name of your program. It should immediately spring to life. To save even more typing, you can assign short names to your default paths--for instance, name the App Path key s.exe instead of shazam.exe, and you'll only have to enter s in the Run dialog box instead of shazam.
