UnAuthroized Change made to Windows Vista and invalid product key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was checking my e-mail when I got a blue screen and my computer shut down, when it restarted I get "An Unauthorized Change was made to Windows Vista" message, my product key is considered invalid and I can do nothing but browse the internet. I've done a system restore to a previous date and it restored my system but I keep being prompted to activate windows. I've tried using the product key from the bottom of laptop and its saying its invalid, I've called and trying to activate it by phone and it said it couldn't be validated. I was than hung up on.  I haven't made any changes to my computer other than the windows update than ran last night, which I removed prior to doing the system restore and it didn't help. I'm running Vista Home Premium and i've had this laptop for over a year now without a problem. I ran a diagnostic and I get this. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

  • Hi Ajazzchic,

The error 0xc004c4a8 means that Vista needs to be re-activated.  I just checked your Vista's product key our records show that you successfully activated this key 5 times on two computers.

If your issue is not resolved, I recommend calling the Activation Call Center again and explain that the Activation is showing as Successfull on Microsoft's side, but your Vista isn't Activating correctly and either the Activation Rep will help resolve the issue or will transfer you to a support person that can (insist that they transfer you, not just give you a phone number to call)

Rolfieh: your issue is not the same as Ajazzchic's. Please create your own thread, post a Diagnostic Report and a description of the issue.

    To generate a diagnostic report:

    1)    Login to Vista and Click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.

    2)    Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.

    3)    A window will come up asking if you want to Run or Save, Select Run

    4)    When the program runs, Click the Continue button, then click the Copy button.

    5)  Paste the report in the new thread

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • I appear to have a similar problem.  Since a new set of updates was downloaded and installed to Vista yesterday when I log in I get a black screen telling me that an anuthorised change has occurred and all I can get to is the internet.  When I run a Vista validation it tells me that it is not a genuine copy (I was purchaesed with teh PC from dell about 18 months ago so I know its genuine).  I have forced it to go into repair mode by turning it off during boot up as I can not appear to get to a restore feature otherwise (can not restore in safe mode!!!!!).  If I do this again I will turn off automatic updates.
