The system registry file is missing or corrupt. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi. So my laptop died while I was using it, which happens sometimes. Usually I just start it right back up with no problems. This time, problem. Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt. File: \Windows\system32\config\system. Status: 0xc00000e9. It's Vista, if that's relevant. I don't have the installation disk. Am I gonna need one of those? My biggest concern is that I'll lose certain things on that computer. Which would put a spectacular frown on my face. Tell me that I won't lose stuff.

p.s. - Um, we need to have a talk about those forum categories, social dot Microsoft dot com.

Oh, and to your problem: this error codes is an big error. In this case i would prefere you to repair your installation using a new Windows ISO.When you have not such a CD, contact your computer manufacturer. Or buy a new OS, for example Windows 8.1.

And if you have no backups of your data, you can copy them from your Computer back to somewhere. But not using Windows Vista. You should Download Linux Ubuntu (or else) and burn the iso on a DVD. Than you can use it as live system to access your Computer. If you don't know how this works, you can ask.

Consumer questions should be asked on answers.microsoft.com as indicated but I can tell you that registry errors will get worse and that error code can best be fixed by re-installing the OS.  Yes I did see that you do not have the disk

FYI mainstream support for vista has long been discontinued.

You can boot into a Linux OS running entirely from a CD/DVD or USB stick. This allows you to try out the OS before installing it.

This is also useful because you can use the live OS to mount the HDD and read from it.

Information on how to use live Linux distros is beyond the scope of Microsoft forums though.
