No live OneCare for the rest of the world RRS feed

  • Question

  • In my last visit to US I purchased a brand new HP notebook and together with it I purchase the One Live Care on a BOX.

Back to my country after trying several times to subscribe to the service that I PAID already I could not manage to do it.

After a lot or research I find out that my subscription would NOT be fullfilled.

No where in the box, instructions, cd, manual or registration I found ANY notice that the system would not work outside US.

So this is how MS take care of REGISTERED users?

Will I get my money back?

    Will it work eventually?

    Very frustrated!

  • I understand your frustration. OneCare does work outside the US, but in limited countries. Not having the retail box here in hand, I can't tell you if it notes that or not.

The FAQ at http://onecare.live.com includes this:

In which countries and languages is Windows Live OneCare available?
The Windows Live OneCare subscription service is available in the following countries and languages: Australia (English), Austria (German), Belgium (Dutch, French), Canada (English, French), France (French), Germany (German), Ireland (English), Italy (Italian), Japan (Japanese), Mexico (Spanish), Netherlands (Dutch), New Zealand (English), Singapore (English), Spain (Spanish), Switzerland (French, German), United Kingdom (English), United States (English, Spanish).

Now, as long as you language is supported - that is the operating system language, you can use the unsupported, not sanctioned by Microsoft workaround to activate your subscription. At the end of 12 months, if OneCare is still not available in our country, then you will need to repeat the process below or a variation of it to renew with a product key.

Create a new LiveID with a US address. Contact a trusted friend in the US and provide that person with the LiveID, Password, and the OneCare product key. Have them log in with the LiveID at http://onecare.live.com/activate and use the option to activate with a token using the product key from inside your retail box. Once that has been completed, change the password on the LiveID. (You can only trust people so far...) Then open OneCare on your PC and activate it with the LiveID used to create the subscription. Note that you can use a friend in any country where OneCare is available for sale per the above list. Reinstalls and installs to the 2nd and 3rd PC do not perform the check for IP and language (at this time, at least), so you won't need to repeat the process again.

That is how MS makes the live of users easy.

    Scandalous, shameful, outrageous, etc

How do they want to sell it this way to "ordinary" people for whom it was made in the first place.

    This is a scream !

Apparently, you misunderstand. I provided an unsupported workaround. If you live in a country where it is sold, you can activate it. OneCare is not just a program, it is a service and as such there are licensing issues to deal with. OneCare is not sold in all countries and cannot be activated in all countries due to several reasons - support needs and capabilities, local laws and regulations, and probably many more.

i thanks for the method but it is still a shame that a serious company as microsoft sales this product and nowhere in the case can be find something about which countries have the service.

I am really dissapointed. but never again

One of this days i won't be able to use Windows Vista because another lame microsoft excuse, and then what everyone is going to change it for a reliable software as linux products. shame

  • I really don't understand what's happening here, well I do but its baffling to me. I live in Thailand. I purchased Vista Ultimate x64 (Retail Version) and installed it. Then of course Vista warns you that you have no Virus protection and your computer is at risk. It kindly makes suggestions for you, OneCare being one of them! Which I choose based on a recommendation from a friend.

Now, at that point why didn't MS they stop me from downloading and using the trail period?  So it's ok for them to supply software to a market they say they cannot supply as long as they haven't collected any money for it? Hmmm, not sure what the lawyers would say about that one. (I refer to the comment below about supported counties)

I have been trying to sign up for a subscription for some time now, however every time I go through the wizard it takes me to a web page all in Thai which I cannot read and the page has no visible means of switching to English.  I have been ignoring this thinking it was some small glitch which I would find a workaround for. Today I got a bit more serious after the same thing happened and decided to look for the workaround, and come upon these threads and now realizing  I have just been wasting my time and I will have to something else.

I am a longtime user of Norton and will switch back to Norton's. I really only tried OneCare because of my friends recommendation. Personally I would not use the workaround offered below, god knows when that will break or other problems may arise from doing that.

So what's my motivation for writing this. I just feel this situation has been handled very poorly.  If MS can stop me from purchasing a subscription then surely they could have prevented me from downloading it in the first place (prevention is better than cure, yes?).  BTW nothing to do with my Windows Live Account, that was created a long time ago in Australia.  So it sounds like they are using IP address which is also mentioned (possibly OS).  What if I am a US citizen abroad on a month's work assignment in one of the unlucky unsupported counties and I need to extend my subscription?  I am not sure, however I have a funny feeling it will not be roses they will be smelling. One last thing they could have done is at least given me a Web Page I could have switched the language to English. Now in hindsight I assume the web page I was presented with when I tried to subscribe was a notice to say that not possible go away! I know, English is not the only other language in the world, however it would be something given that English is the accepted universal business language.

Ok, just had to get it off my chest! I don't enjoy whining and hope there is something constructive to be gained  from comments.

  • Hello, Ian.

I agree that you should be prevented from downloading the trial until you sign in and acknowledge a dialog that explains what countries you need to be a resident of in order to purchase OneCare. Sorry that you encountered this problem.
