Is my Windows 7 genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, i'm not entirely sure what i'm asking albeit I suspect I already know thw answer. I purchased a home premium disk of ebay and was gutted to find the code written on a piece of paper, so i gues no licence? once installed it passed the validation test. Could there be any way this copy could be legal? I have raised a dispute through ebay and dont want to get fobbed of by the seller?

  • Hello Robert Albrow,

The circumstances of your purchase are not promising--genuine Microsoft retail products have their product keys printed on a yellow-orange Proof of License label with certain security measures in the paper.  A far cry from a number written on a slip of scrap paper!

The explanation of the situation may be in the product ID bolded below:

    Validation Code: 0

That most likely falls into the MSDN category, which is further explained in the "Blocked Keys" sticky post by Carl_OH that is at the top of this section of the forum.

It's good that you have raised a dispute.  Darin Smith, the Microsoft moderator, will return to the forum on July 6, 2010, and we will ask that he check the product key against the MSDN list to which he has access, and post what he finds.  So come back next week and look for his reply in this thread.....it may help to bolster your case with the eBay folks.

  • Thank you for the response, I have since noticed the guy who i purchased my copy from is selling other copies. I would be grateful to receive any further assistance you may be able to offer.

I would be more than happy to get police / trading standards involved in this dispute. How would I get official confirmation that that what I received is illegal?

Fortunately for me he guy is based in the UK and subject to UK law and I believe such measures will be better than the termination of his ebay account.

    Thank you again.

  • You need to notify eBay (and PayPal if you used them - your credit card peopl, otherwise) anyhow.

Point then at this thread, and make sure that you keep both hardcopy and sofware versions of the report.

Darin will be back tomorrow (US time) and will be able to give an Official MS declaration of (in)validity then.

  • I have confirmed that this is an MSDN Product Key.

MSDN Keys are licensed to Only be used by the owner of the specific MSDN Subscription, that the key originated from. In other words, by selling you just that key (instead of selling the whole MSDN Subscription...which can retail for $500+ for the lowest level subscription), the seller made the key Non-Genuine.  If it hasn't already, the key will eventually validate as Non-Genuine.

    Thank you,
