NTUSER.DAT blocks recovery RRS feed

  • Question

  • System is a Dell Inspiron 600M laptop running XP SP3.  Got corrupted by a persistent virus but have good WHS backups pre-virus.  Ended up having to clean install XP, but in trying to recover the drive from WHS overwriting the install, it hits "windows home server cannot copy ntuser: it is being used by another person or program" and then quits teh recovery transfer.  Is there some way around this?  I tried transferring each folder individually skipping the NTUSER.DAT files but that didn't work.  Currently I have started rebuilding the system reinstalling programs, but would like to get back all the bits and pieces.  (BTW most of my data is on a E: partition or on the Home Server so I haven't lost data, just installed programs and settings.)  Any ideas?  Or have I hosed it beyond recovery?

  • Boot with the Home Computer Restore CD and restore the entire partition. It's not possible to restore a running OS using the single file restore mode as you're attempting.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
