Disable Migration? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a home server with a 1TB systemdrive.

My plan was to store all my files on it. I started to copy my >50Gb music collection to the Music folder, and my dvd-files <backup> collection to Videos.
Soon after I did this there were several annoying "File Conflict Error Messages". Especally on all those VTS_0?_?.VOB files.

    1. Why can't I store my dvd files in d:\shares\Videos? (Why does File Conflicts occur on files with similar names?)
    2. Why does the files Migrate and create tombstones when I only have one drive to the storage.  D:\
    3. Can I disable these migrations? (Backups must work)

    4. Because of my problems I mounted a USB drive with "Disk Management" into D:\shares\dvd and put my files there. That worked great until today.
Today I found that c:\ had very lite space left, this because of many 150MB log files in
    c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs\DEUtil.??????.??0000.4428.log full of:

the later section repeated with the filename of every file on that disk.

    My 4th question:
How to stop the creation of this large log files - Hopefully from keeping demigrator.exe off my mounted harddrive =)
I have already tried to deny <SYSTEM> "full control" to my mounted drive, with no success.

    Regards

That's not normal.  What is the exact File Conflict error message?

    1. Why can't I store my dvd files in d:\shares\Videos? (Why does File Conflicts occur on files with similar names?)

Are you copying the data to the path you showed (D:\shares)?  If so, that is unsupported and probably your problem.  All data must be added to WHS through the UNC path (\\server\[sharename]).

    2. Why does the files Migrate and create tombstones when I only have one drive to the storage.  D:\
    3. Can I disable these migrations? (Backups must work)

It's unsupported and not recommended (it will most likely have other unforseen consequences on your server).

    4. Because of my problems I mounted a USB drive with "Disk Management" into D:\shares\dvd and put my files there.

That is also unsupported (as a matter of fact, logging into the server desktop for any reason is unsupported).  All admin functions should be done from a client using the WHS Console.

    That worked great until today.

If you are copying data to D:\shares, that is probably causing your logs to create all of those errors (because you are going around WHS by copying the data the way you are).  Copy the data to the server the correct way, and the logs should not build up any more after that.

I have already tried to deny <SYSTEM> "full control" to my mounted drive, with no success.

  • Hi!

Okey, I didn't know that I had to use \\server\share instead of d:\share\???. I just logged on to my home server locally and copied all files from my old server to d:\shares.
I don't remember exactly what sort of File Conflict error there was , but I had several VOB files in different directories that had conflicts with other VOB files in other directories.

I will now clean up my DATA partition and try to copy the data again, the right way.

    Thanks
