Unfortunately, the key that you have found is HP's OEM Key - and your computer for some reason is unable to utilise that key properly (perhaps due to some minor file corruption).

You need to try *really* hard to read the key from the sticker so that you can enter that.

Your other option is to get hold of HP and see if they have a record of what your Key is, or gif they can give you another OEM Key that may work.

  • Urgh..:(  Not good!  Thanks for you reply Noel.  I have tried to read it and I can make out bits of it, just, and I can hazard a good guess at the other bits.  Do I just need to type it in when asked or do I need to do the phone activation?  I can have a go at trying several options if it will let me?  Sorry to be so thick but what information would I need to give to HP if I have to phone them?

    thanks again

You shouldn't need phone activation - just keep plugging away at the variations over the Internet until you get one that works :)

If you phone/email HP, they will certainly want to know the Make, Model, and Serial Number (NOT Part Number!)
They will also want your name and address, and probably also whether you registered the machine with them for warranty or other purposes (for security reasons).
It looks like the machine is less than 2 years old - did you get an extended warranty? If so, then HP may have a record of that and can use that to correlate with your request.

Don't bother phoning MS - there's absolutely nothing they can do in these circumstances, except either refer you back to MS, or sell you another copy of Vista or Win 7 :)

    HTH - and Good Luck
