Windows 7 build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased the family 3 pack a while back online, downloaded the software and installed windows and has been working great now for the last couple of months.  Now I am getting

Windows 7 build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine

and microsoft is telling me that the key is being blocked for some reason, I have contacted the seller from whom I purchased it and I am waiting to hear from them as well as I have filled a counterfeit report with Microsoft against the seller.  Here is the info that i am getting when I run the  Diagnostic Tool:  What is the problem and can this be fixed as I am very upset at the moment.

  • I have checked the key listed in Farmerjoe121's Diagnostic Report and it is showing as Blocked for a reason of: Returned to Microsoft.

When software is returned, the key is automatically Blocked from further use, in our system.

I recommend doing what you have already done; contact the company that sold you the software and demand a refund. It would appear that they have reported this software as Returned.

Also, as far as I understand, there are very few retailers allowed to distribute Microsoft Windows, digitally (i.e. by download). Most, (if not all) would be well known retailers.  What was the name of the retailer you bought this software from?

    Thank you,

  • Your product ID

    Windows Product ID: 00359-062-7079784-85642

does show you have a Family Pack.  The Family Pack is an upgrade license sku only.

This key may be blocked because for being in use on too many computers or because the original buyer was given a refund within the 45 days allowed for that.  In any case you can only request a refund from the seller and replace the software.  There is nothing you can do within the software itself.  If you purchase copies of Windows 7 Home Premium you can simply replace the old product key with the new one without having to reinstall Windows.

eBay, the Amazon Marketplace, and discount websites are full of counterfeit copies of Windows 7.  There are various other illegal sales by individuals on the web.  Do not buy from an individual.  Only buy Windows 7 from the Microsoft Store, Amazon Corp., or other trusted seller.

  • Is Walmart a trusted seller?
My sister's machine was purchased from Walmart about a year ago and it is displaying the WGA error stating it is not genuine as of today.

  • You'll need to create your own thread and post a MGA Report from your sister's machine in order to receive any troubleshooting advice.

  • Darin,

Thanks for tracking the error down and figuring out what it was.  You must have a good eye!  I purchased the software from a comany online called Online Digital Items (www.onlinedigitalitems.com). I purchased the Family Upgrade Pack, but after finding out today that the cd-key was blocked I have contacted them but have not heard back from them yet.  I also went ahead and ordered a copy of Windows 7 Pro from Microsoft and should have it next week.  Have you heard about this company and are they in fact legit?  I did file a report with Microsoft about being sold Counterfeit software, but I have not heard back from anyone.  Did I do the right thing by submitting it as counterfeit?  I have requested a refund so we shall see.  If you would please get back with me.

    Thanks

  • When you click on their Contact Us link and it reads: Contact us by telephone

"We don't currently offer phone support. Unfortunately, we don't have staff available to contact you by telephone"

Would you really think you are dealling with a legimate business?  Of course not!

  • Farmerjoe,

Just had a look at that site and instantly recognized it. I recall the same issue from users on the answers forum. This site is bogus. You will never see a legitimate ultimate for 61% off. Surprisingly they are selling home premium for more than ultimate.

As I recall the other ones were a family pack too with a blocked key (not MSDN). I think they never got a response from the seller.

You could also protest the charges on your credit card.

    EDIT:

Did you read their refund policy prior to purchase?

  • I can't belive I fell for the trick! I knew I was screwing up and did it anyway, you can bet that wont happen again!!!  I already paid the the card off, but you can bet the card company will get a phone call tonight!!  Is there any think that Microsoft can do from your end?  I would like to see them go after these suckers, is there any thing else that I can do to get my money back?  Just looks like a hard earned lesson!!

  • Darin Smith MS is there any way that I can email you some information off of the forum?  I have some new information regarding the company that I purchased the software through.  I want to pass it on to you and have you look something up for me if you don't mind.  I tried to look for a email address in the profiles but I can't find one.  What would be a good way to get a hold of you?

If you would please post back.

  • Hi Farmerjoe121,

Unfortunately, if I were to give out my email, it would get bombarded with spam, and other nasty stuff, in no time.

Also, I am a forum moderator.  I'm not in the group that goes after companies selling Non-Genuine Microsoft software.  If the information you want to provide me is to help Microsoft pursue the retailer that sold you the Non-Genuine Windows, I recommend submitting it through our 'Reporting Software Piracy' page at http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.aspx  While due to legal and time restraints, they can not provide you updates on any action that may have resulted from your report, they do read and followup on every report that is submitted.
