Cannot access created shares from new PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just got a new PC to add to my network and I can't seem to access the new folders I created in the shared folder on WHS. It can access all the default folders that were out there when WHS was installed without any problems (Photos, Music, Users, etc). When I try to access my Downloads folder that I added to WHS it gives me the following error:

    Windows cannot access \\SERVER\Downloads

I have no problem accessing the folders from my main PC and my Acer Aspire One. Both the problem PC and the Aspire One have Windows 7 installed on them.

  • If there is no password for the account on the PC with the issue, but there is one for the account on WHS, then the "problem" PC may be accessing the shares via the guest account instead.

You should make sure that you have an account on the PC whose login name matches an account on the server, and that the passwords for those accounts match. See this FAQ posting for more information about how to make sure that account login names are properly matched.

  • Make sure that passwords match the user(s) on WHS and the computer(s) you're trying to access the shares on and make sure the user was given permission to use that share in the WHS console.

  • There isn't a password on the problem PC right now and I was trying to access the folder directly from the Shared Folders shortcut the Console install places on the desktop.

  • Passwords for all users, including Administrator should match on WHS and the client PC.

  • That worked. It's still strange to me that my main PC doesn't have a password at all nor a user name that matches any user name on the WHS and it's able to access all shares without a problem. Nonetheless, thanks for the help.

At some time you were probably prompted for a user name and password. Some versions of Windows can retain those credentials and re-use them the next time you access a network resource.
