Windows says it's already activated--then I get "Invalid Product Key" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi.  I've been going in a circle with this.  The XP Pro product came shrink-wrapped, and to my eye looks utterly valid: holograph on CD, license sticker genuine down to the preprinted silver thread, booklet attached, etc.  Yet although Windows says it's already activated, whenever I run Windows Update I get "Invalid Product Key".  What's the story here?  Thanks in advance for your help.  Here's the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool dump:

  • Hello LandmarkLabs,

The installation of Windows XP Pro on your Everex StepNote laptop computer is nongenuine because it was installed with an Invalid Product Key.  An Invalid Product Key is a a product key made up by a pirating program known as a Key generator, or KeyGen for short.  Such a product key was never officially issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.

If the partial product key reported by the utility, YTJ4J-QGKT9-J43HM, is identical to the product key printed on either the Certificate of Authenticity (if OEM) or the yellow-orange Proof of License label (if retail), then you have inadvertently acquired counterfeit softrware.  Please return the software to the seller and request a full refund.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at piracy@microsoft.comAlso, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Windows Complimentary Offer or for the Windows Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EFIAC  If you would like to participate in the Windows Genuine Offer, please click the Learn More Online or Resolve Now link being displayed on your screen by the WGA Notifier utility.

  • I have the SAME p[roblem. It has happened TWICE after MS Office updates on TWO older Dell computers. One purchased in 2001 and the other 2002. DELL will be zero help of course. On the 2001 model I found a later copy ofthe GA software and downloaded it and the ACTIVATION nag went away. One of the latest Microsoft updates BREAKS the scheme. My version of Office has been VALID since 2002. I have made other office updates using my original disks without error. Last week before the update everythinbg was FINE. I had ALWAYS passed the GA test - ALWAYS.

When I try to ACTIVATE the product within an office program the prodcvt says it is ALREADY activated. ALREADY activated. When I went to download the latest version of the GA software all I found was a browser based test that ALWAYS fails.

I'm furious over such a silly bug. Microsoft, this is why you sometimes get some bad press. I own FOUR computers with VALID softwarelicenses on each one.

Why is Office behaving this way?
