  • Imran,

Right now, your computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 6), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 1).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misues, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.

Your Sony VGN-S1HP almost certainly shipped with a license to run a Windows Operating System.  It is licensed to run the edition of Windows on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Look on the computer or in the materials that came with the computer to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  Click here:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

More bad news:  your installation of Office Professsional 2003 is nongenuine.  (Code 114)

  • 1) The edition is Windows XP Professional 1-2CPU

    2) No it does not mention OEM anywhere on the label

    3) The manufacturer "Sony Corporation" is mentioned under the Windows edition.

  • Imran,

Please download and run this key updater utility:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409

It may be able to convert your bogus Volume License installation of XP Pro back into a "legal" OEM installation of XP Pro and allow you to update normally.

If your installation of XP has too many damaged or "cracked" files, the utility will not be able to complete.  In such case, you should offload any valuable user files on the computer, then use the Sony-supplied recovery solution to put the original Sony installation of XP Pro back onto the computer.  That installation is Genuine and will get updates.

  • Imran,

It may be that the key changer/updater is unable to convert your particular installation to a Genuine installation.

You might want initiate a free email tech support incident at this link:  http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?Gprid=9860

Or, you may decide to save your personal files and use the Sony recovery solution to put a fresh copy of the original XP installation back on the computer.  There is no doubt that the copy that came with the computer is Genuine.
