Server Administrator or Enterprise Administrator? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

A few weeks ago I got the 70-680 exam in one pass. Now I want to go forward and study Windows Server 2008 R2. But, which path is the best to go? I have little knowledge about Server so I think the best is to learn it from the start.

MCITP: Enterprise Administrator on Windows Server 2008
    Exam 70-640
    Exam 70-642

    Exam 70-643
    Exam 70-647
    plus either
    Exam 70-620
    or
    Exam 70-6241
    or
    Exam 70-680
    or
    Exam 70-681

    or

MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008
    Exam 70-640
    Exam 70-642
    Exam 70-646

I hope somebody can help me :)

  • Given that exams 70-640 and 70-642 are common between the two certifications, I'd do MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 first and then look at doing MCITP: Enterprise Administrator on Windows Server 2008 if you enjoyed doing the first track.

  • Yes, I absolutely agree with Mr. Wharty.

    Server Admin first.

  • One more vote for the proposed solution by Jeff.

This is a common thing we also advise our students as a CPLS.

  • Focus on learning all about Active Directory (640) and Networking (642).

This will give you a great in depth start to learning all about Server 2008R2.

Don't freak too much about the oddball applications they throw at you (remember you only need a 700 out of 1000)

Focus your efforts on a thorough understanding of AD, Certificates and DNS.

Not only will that help you pass the exams, but it will also help you succeed in the real world.

After that, I agree, take the 646. It's a great overview of what each role and feature was created for without too much depth.

Unless you have some experience under your belt, the 643 and 647(Enterprise exams) really won't help you in your day to day activities as a beginner in the field.

If you need help, give me a shout! (I'm always willing to pay it forward to help someone who wants to be great in the field)
