Desktop has a message "This copy of Windows is not Genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • My desktop was purchased on e-Bay in September of 2009 from an individual with Windows pre-installed.  I have no Windows DVD to re-install.  After receiving I created an image of the system disk in case I ever lost my system and had to start over.  A little over a month ago I had to do that.  I restored from the image and re-installed all my software.  Everything was working great until this week when I got the message in the lower right hand corner above the date and time that this copy of Windows was not genuine.  My system is still running, but I am unsure as to how long this will continue.  The output from MGADIAG is pasted in below.  I need to know if this is a real problem or something I can ignore.

    Please advise.

  • Unfortunately, like many PCs sold on auction web sites, yours has a counterfeit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate installed.  In order to fix this issue, you'll need to purchase a genuine edition of Windows 7 and perform a "clean install".

You have an ASUS OEM_SLP Key on a Gigabyte retail motherboard. This will never work - the installation is counterfeit as it stands.

At a guess, I would say that you finally got around to installing Service Pack 1 - and this removed the Activation exploit that had been holding the counterfeit installation together.

Is there a COA sticker on your machine's case? if so, for what version and edition of Widnows is it valid?
