Backup failed protocol error RRS feed

  • Question

  • This may be a one-off error or not, but one of my Vista Ultimate clients failed to backup this morning.

"A protocol error occurred between the computer and server.

    EndFileRecordHash request

    FileRecordHash"

Was all it said. It worked fine five previous nights since I got the WHS machine running. All of the remotely similar postings I see are from early this year--i.e., betaware. Anybody got any ideas?

  • ...and the manual backup worked just fine. Hmmm. Go figure.

The top driver for deploying WHS was auto backup. I sure hope these two failures in a row are aberations.

  • What happens if you try and do a manual backup?

I've had occurances when the backup failed, and then when i ran it again it worked fine without any changes!

  • I was expecting it to work this morning, as you note. No Joy. This time I get the error:

"Failure Details for Volume (Local Disk):

The computer failed to take a snapshot of the volume for backup."

I will try a manual backup now...

I'm marking this as an answer since I'm getting nagged. It's an answer in the sense the problem has gone away. It's not an answer in the sense that there is no hint why this backup failed two mornings in a row with different messages and works the next two.

  • I had this problem too. I ran a manual and actually got the same message that I did the first time, not the snapshot failure error message. When I ran a second manual backp, it worked fine.
